Save for a goal (trip, emergency fund…): the method

Updated November 1, 2026

“I'd like to save” almost never goes anywhere. “I want $2,400 for a June trip” does. Here is how to turn a wish into a plan with numbers.

1. Give it a name, an amount and a date

A vague goal won't hold. Decide what you want (a trip, a computer, an emergency fund), what it costs, and by when. The date is what turns a wish into a plan.

2. Work out what to set aside each month

The formula: (target − what you already have) ÷ number of months.

Example. A $2,400 trip in 12 months, with $600 already saved: (2,400 − 600) ÷ 12 = $150 per month. Starting from zero it would be $200 per month.

If the amount is too high for your budget, you have three levers: push the date back, lower the target, or find savings elsewhere. Better to know now than halfway through.

3. Pay yourself first

The classic trap is saving “whatever is left”. Almost nothing is left. Set your amount aside as soon as your income arrives, for example with an automatic transfer to a separate savings account. In Canada, look into accounts such as the TFSA depending on your situation.

4. See your progress

Nothing motivates like a bar filling up. Update your goal at each transfer and celebrate the milestones (25%, 50%, 75%).

5. A special case: the emergency fund

It is often sized between three and six months of essential expenses, adjusted to your job stability and obligations. Start small (a first milestone of $1,000, say), then build it up in steps.

6. Adjust without giving up

One missed month doesn't ruin a goal: recalculate the monthly amount with the time left, and carry on. Only giving up entirely really counts.
