The 50/30/20 rule: how to apply it to your budget

Updated November 1, 2026

Not sure where to start? The 50/30/20 rule is an easy-to-remember guide for splitting your take-home pay. It isn't a law: it's a starting point you adapt to your life.

What is the 50/30/20 rule?

It was popularised by Elizabeth Warren in a book published in 2005. The idea: split your net income (what reaches your account) into three parts.

  • 50% for needs: rent, basic groceries, transport to work, insurance, essential bills, minimum debt payments;
  • 30% for wants: eating out, outings, entertainment subscriptions, trips, clothes beyond the essentials;
  • 20% for savings and debt repayment: emergency fund, goals, payments beyond the minimum.

An example with $3,000 net per month

  • needs: $1,500;
  • wants: $900;
  • savings and debt: $600.

To see where you stand, sort last month's spending into these three groups and compare. The result is often surprising: needs are bigger than expected, or small wants weigh more than you thought.

What if my rent is too high for 50%?

In big cities, needs often exceed 50%. That is not a failure: adjust the proportions. A 60/20/20 or 60/25/15 split is still solid if you save regularly. What matters is that the savings share never drops to zero.

When you have debt

If a debt is costly in interest (a credit card, for example), raise the debt share and trim wants until it's paid off. Paying down a high rate is often worth more than saving at the same time, apart from a small emergency cushion.

The limits of the rule

  • it starts from net income: if yours is irregular, use your lowest month;
  • the line between need and want is blurry (a phone plan, yes; the biggest plan, maybe not);
  • it says nothing about your specific goals: add them to the savings share.
